Shimano Saragosa SW Spin Reel Review
Still the best buy salt water spinning reel!

The Shimano Saragosa SW range has now been available for over 4 years and is it still your best buy in 2025? There are many factors that make a great reel and Shimano in the Saragosa range has ticked most of the boxes very well, but lets breal it down into practical fishing points!

STRENGTH

The Hagane body is both light and strong with good rigidity, this is the heart of a reel that supports all the other components and Shimano does this very well, the Saragosa reel foot provides great strength and these reels can be trusted to handle the strongest fights without any issues or excessive flex. The double stack drag is also smooth and reliable, cross carbon drag washer perform well and handle extended fights well without overheating. Long term durability is also commendable on the drag washers and the gearing system which remains smooth and strong over years of hard fishing. The spool shaft also handles excessive pressures with no issues. The screw in handle that attaches to the main gear directly is rigid enough and very comfortable to fish with.

SEALING

While no reel can claim to be 100% waterproof the seals and design of the IPX8 sealing of the Saragosa is renowned. While you shouldn't reel underwater, these reels cope well with being dunked and submerged or splashed with sea spray. This doesn't mean they should never be serviced but some reels die a quick death in these conditions while others get rough when wet. Other brands such as Penn, Daiwa and Okuma offer a similar level of sealing in recent years.

LINE HANDLING

where almost all Shimano reels sine is their line lay and casting ability. The lip of the spool is a work of art that allows for the furthest casts in their class, by a measurable margin, I have yet to cast a better casting reel. Aiding the spool design the oscillating system lays down the line very smoothly and evenly which also aids casting distance and the Shimanos are known to not cause wind knots even when properly filled which can be an issue on some brands.

THE FISHING EXPERIENCE

Most competitive or serious anglers trust Saragosas to perform well, so well in fact that they are a part of your tackle that seamlessly blends with the best rods and lines, making you forget about them because the trust is there and for that reason if your budget stretches that far a Saragosa makes a perfect reel for almost any angler. The smaller sizes are ideal for lure casting, up to the largest sizes capable of challenging the biggest gamefish or sharks you might encounter.

CONCLUSION

While anglers are faced with a wide array of reels to choose from, the top seller worldwide by a massive margin is the Saragosa, it is a proven product you can trust, are there better reels, certainly, but not near this pricepoint and not offering as much performance for your hard earned money. So yes the Saragosa in our opinion remains the top choice for serious saltwater anglers!
